Wind Turbine Basic

Basically, a wind turbine or wind generator is an alternator attached to a propeller. When the wind blows, the propeller turns and the alternator begins producing electricity. The design details that determin which turbines are best suited for various wind speeds get more involved, but all wind turbines operate in the same manner.
 
 

 

 Wind Turbines for Residential Power

Where there is good, consistent wind flow, wind energy is one of the most economical forms of alternative energy available today. Advancements in wind turbine technology has seen the improvement in efficiency of the working components and reduced the number of moving parts, resulting in very reliable and effective available turbine designs. Wind turbines are viewed as a very reliable renewable energy source even if your wind flow fluctuates.
 
 

 How Wind Turbines are Used

Basically, the installation of a wind turbine is a bit more involved than installing solar panels, overall they are relatively easy to incorporate into your alternative energy system. The turbine needs to be mounted in an area free from obstructions to wind flow such as nearby buildings and trees.
The two primary differences between wind turbines and solar panels are: Solar panels produce direct current (DC) electricity and wind generators  do not.. so a rectifier must be used to convert the turbine's output to DC. Second.. Solar panels are " Passive" electricity producers, they only produce electricity when a charge is needed. Wind generators are "Active" electricity producers. When the wind is blowing , they will produce current which must be used to prevent damage to the turbine.
